Celebrate Our Heritage: Through Movement

The "Celebrate our Heritage: Through Movement" event is an opportunity for the museum to raise funds to continue its important work. This event will feature performances of traditional dances, music, and more from various cultures, showcasing the beauty and richness of movement as an expression of cultural identity. In addition to the performances, there will be food, drinks, and opportunities to connect with members of the community.

The evening will include performances of traditional dances, music, and more, from various cultures, showcasing the beauty and richness of movement as an expression of cultural identity. In addition to the performances, there will be food, drinks, and opportunities to connect with members of the community.

The “Celebrate Our Heritage: Through Movement” performers consist of the following:
Mosaico Cultural is a dance group that specializes in traditional Mexican and another Latino folk dances. The Polish Amateur Theater Group, “Korab,” will perform traditional Polish folk dances.
The Phenomenal Dolls is a local majorette dance team, performing and competing all over the Midwest. Local author, Sandra Colbert will recite moving poetry reflecting Lithuania’s cultural beauty. Showcasing the rich Italian heritage, will be the Amici Italiani Youth Troupe. The evening will wrap up with Irish and Celtic folk music performed by Ron Holm & Jannie Nelson of Trinadora.

This event will include a delicious dinner, a large silent auction, and a variety show highlighting the "movements" of the cultures the museum preserves: (African-American, Hispanic, Irish, Italian, Lithuanian, and Polish)​

Doors open at 5:00 PM. -- There will be live entertainment and a cash bar.
Welcome at 6:00 PM -- The evening will begin with a short welcome and presentation.
Dinner begins at 6:15PM -- Attendees will have their choice of
  • Tuscan Chicken with Cream and Sundried Tomatoes
  • Salmon with Lobster Sauce
  • Quinoa Stuffed Pepper (Vegan)
  • Children's Meal Option (12 and under) - Chicken Strips, Mac & Cheese, with Veggies and a Fruit Cup

Our Distinguished Emcee

Professor Theresa Paulette Gilbert​

Theresa Paulette Gilbert is a Professor of Composition and Literature at Rock Valley College. She was awarded the Racial Justice Award as part of the 2021 YWCA Women of Achievement Awards. She is also recognized as a recipient of the Spirit of Education award, which honors women who provide educational resources that empower and develop individuals personally, professionally, and financially.

After living and teaching in Malawi, South Central Africa, she and her family moved to Rockford, where she has been employed by Rock Valley College for more than 30 years. She has been an advisor and mentor to faculty, staff, and students pursuing their academic and career goals.
