Discover the Real Saint Patrick
Sunday, March 17th, 2024 2-4 PM Who was the real Saint Patrick? How do we know?
Come to the Ethnic Heritage Museum on St. Patrick’s Day, Sunday, March 17, 2024 to investigate these questions. Join Lynell Cannell of the Ethnic Heritage Museum at 2:15 p.m. on Saint Patrick’s Day, Sunday, March 17, 2024, as she gives a free presentation at the Museum to get to the bottom of the real Saint Patrick’s question. |
When we celebrate Saint Patrick’s Day on March 17th, who are we celebrating? Saint Patrick is the principal patron saint of Ireland and his religious feast day is March 17th. There are many stories of exploits as he “converted the Irish to Christianity”, but these stories were written almost two centuries after he died. So how do we discover the real Patrick underneath the later embellishments and stories of sainthood?
Two of Saint Patrick’s writings have come down to us as copied and recopied by scribes through the centuries. Lynell will share the biographical details and sense of Patrick’s values and missionary persistence that are evidenced by these writings.
She will explore some of the Saint Patrick stories and myths and what they might symbolize and then compare them to Patrick as seen through his writings. She will also touch on some of the approaches that modern scholars have used to deduce possible “truth” about the Real Saint Patrick.
The rest of Heritage Museum Park, including the Ethnic Heritage Museum exhibit galleries and the Graham-Ginestra House, will be open from 2 to 4 pm on March 17th for the usual entrance fees (free to members).
